Moving into your first completely unfurnished apartment is exciting, but it can also be a massive financial shock if you aren't prepared. Before you go on a shopping spree, it's essential to understand what you actually _need_ on day one versus what you can buy over time. This guide breaks down the essentials for an unfurnished space.

## Priority 1: Day One Essentials

These are the items you literally cannot comfortably survive the first 24 hours without. Pack these in your \"First Night Box.\"

  * Toilet paper and hand soap
  * Shower curtain and liner \(apartments almost never provide these\)
  * Bath towels
  * Air mattress or real mattress and bedding
  * Trash bags and paper towels
  * Phone chargers and an extension cord

**Common Mistake:** Forgetting that an unfurnished apartment means NO window coverings. Buy cheap paper blinds or tension rods with basic curtains immediately so you have privacy on the first night.

## The Bedroom Essentials

Don't rush to buy a full bedroom set. Start with a quality mattress and a basic metal bed frame \(they usually cost under $50 and are highly durable\).
