The most effective way to make a small living room feel bigger is to reduce visual weight: choose furniture on legs rather than solid bases, keep floor space visible, and mount storage on walls instead of the floor. Color and mirrors help, but furniture scale and layout have a bigger impact.

## Quick reference

  * Sofa depth: look for compact models at 80–85 cm deep \(standard depth is 90–100 cm\)
  * Rug sizing: front legs of the sofa on the rug, not a wall-to-wall rug
  * Coffee table: glass top or open-frame base reduces visual weight
  * Mirror: one large mirror on the wall opposite the main light source

## Clearance Measurements

Aim for at least 90 cm of clearance between the sofa and any opposite furniture for comfortable movement. Between the coffee table and the sofa, 40–45 cm is enough. Ensure there is a minimum of 75 cm clearance for any main traffic pathways.

## Layout and Furniture Scale

In a room under 4 m × 3.5 m, an L-shaped sofa will usually block a traffic route or push other furniture against the walls with no breathing room. A two-seater or a compact three-seater with a chair opposite gives you more flexibility. Keep the center of the room as open as possible.

## Options for small or rented homes

If you cannot change the flooring or repaint the walls, focus on: lighter curtains \(white or off-white\), furniture with exposed legs, and removing one piece of furniture to reduce density. A floor lamp takes up less visual space than a side table with a table lamp. Use removable adhesive hooks to hang a large mirror to bounce light.

## Common mistakes

  * Placing a rug that is too small \(so none of the furniture sits on it — this fragments the space rather than anchoring it\)
  * Pushing all furniture against the walls — pulling the sofa even 30 cm from the wall can make the centre feel more spacious
  * Using several small mirrors instead of one large one — small mirrors scatter, a large one reflects a whole section of the room
